Hancock Provides Materials for Teen Gardening Program

Garden_StudentsThanks to Hancock Lumber, a dozen teens from Freeport to Brunswick were able to construct raised bed gardens this spring in a teen gardening program.

“I’ve never planted a tomato before,” said one of the participating teens. “Now I know how to plant and care for lots of different vegetables,” said another.

The Seeds Garden is a collaboration involving Brunswick High School, Seeds of Independence, and Wild Oats Bakery & Café. There are gardens at both Seeds of Independence and the High School. This hands-on program was designed to address food insecurity by teaching gardening skills, and to offer experience in the food industry through internships at Wild Oats. With a total of 20,000 square feet of vegetable gardens to care for and harvest, teens have their work cut out for them this summer and fall.

Seeds of Independence is a nonprofit dedicated to help at-risk youth reach their full potential as independent, productive members of society. For more information, see our website: www.seedsofindependence.org, or give us a call at: 207-865-9267. We are located at 29 Burbank Street at Brunswick Landing.
